Nevada's climate splits the state in two: the Mojave south with mild winters, and the high desert north with real cold. That changes the answer.
Southern Nevada (Las Vegas, Henderson, Pahrump, Laughlin)
Heat pumps are close to ideal. Winters rarely drop below 30°F for long, so a heat pump heats efficiently all season and cools like a standard AC in summer. One outdoor unit, one indoor unit, no gas line needed.
Northern Nevada (Reno, Sparks, Carson City, Elko, Winnemucca)
Modern cold-climate heat pumps work well below freezing, but many homeowners keep a gas furnace as backup (a “dual fuel” system) for the coldest nights and for cheap heat when gas prices are low.
Cost comparison
Heat pump installs cost a bit more than an AC-only change-out, but replace two pieces of equipment. Federal incentives for high-efficiency heat pumps can close the gap.
Maintenance and repair
Heat pumps run year-round, so they get more hours. Annual service matters. Common repairs — reversing valves, defrost boards — are covered in our heat pump repair guide.
