By mid-May, every HVAC company in Las Vegas is booked solid. The homeowners who scheduled a tune-up in March are the ones not sweating it out in July. Here's what a real tune-up includes, and what you can do yourself.
Do it yourself
- Replace the filter (monthly in summer)
- Clear leaves and debris 2 feet around the condenser
- Gently hose the outdoor coil from inside out (power off)
- Check that condensate drain line drips outside when the AC runs
- Test the thermostat — does the outdoor unit start within a minute?
What the technician does
- Measures refrigerant pressures and superheat/subcooling
- Tests capacitor microfarads and contactor
- Checks amp draw on compressor and fan motors
- Cleans evaporator coil access and blower
- Tightens electrical connections
- Inspects ductwork for disconnects in the attic
- Flushes the drain line to prevent a summer overflow
Why it matters in the desert
A 10% low refrigerant charge can raise electric use 20%. A weak capacitor that fails at 4 pm on a Sunday in July becomes an emergency call. A spring AC tune-up costs a fraction of either.
